GENEVA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, is finalising preparations ahead of intra-Syrian negotiations scheduled to start on Feb. 23, his chief of staff said Tuesday.

"The Special Envoy is ready to receive, and looking forward to engaging Syrian parties who are arriving in Geneva this week for the intra-Syrian negotiations," Michael Contet told press here.

"He is putting final touches on arrangements, continuing his consultations with Syrian parties and international actors," he added.

Participants are expected to kick off talks in Geneva's UN headquarters on Feb. 23, 10 months after the last round of negotiations were put on hold amid a humanitarian meltdown and violence.

No indication on whether delegations have already arrived in the Swiss city was given.

The UN-mediated talks are seeking to broker a political end to a conflict which has killed as many as 400,000 people and displaced millions of others since March 2011.

Contet confirmed that upcoming negotiations will be guided by UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

UEFA President Michel Platini has called on American investigator Michael Garcia's report into the bidding Air VaporMax Utility Sale , which led to the controversial awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, to be made public.

"I would like the report to be made public in its entirety," he said at a meeting in Madrid on Wednesday.

FIFA cleared both bids this month and ruled out a revote for the tournaments.

However, they have refused to publish Garcia's report, claiming it would violate Swiss law, where world soccer's governing body is based.

LONDON, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. will be Britain's steadfast ally as it leaves the European Union (EU), Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in London Thursday.

Tillerson held a series of talks throughout Thursday which included a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The meetings concluded with a briefing by Tillerson alongside British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson at Lancaster House in London.

Also taking part in the day's meetings were representatives from France, Italy, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

Their discussions focused on the Middle East, particularly the situations in Iran and Libya as well as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Johnson and Tillerson also discussed the impact Hurricane Irma had had on the United States as well as the Caribbean region.

Tillerson described Britain as a reliable friend and said the U.S. would stand by Britain during what he described as the unique challenges of Brexit.

"We will stand by our ally as Brexit continues to take shape," said Tillerson.

Johnson said Libya was the front line in a common struggle against terrorism and illegal migration, adding "we all share a vital interest in that country's stability."

The situation in DPRK, which had defied the world by testing a nuclear device and firing ballistic missiles, was also discussed during the meetings, according to Johnson.

Tillerson said he had discussed with May the threat posed by Iran in destabilizing the region as well as the situation in Syria once the fight against the Islamic State (IS) is concluded.

SHENZHEN, China, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Golfing great Sir Nick Faldo believes strength in numbers will be the best way for China's rising stars to succeed in the cut-throat professional men's game.

Speaking at the nation's most famous golf club, Mission Hills, the six-time Major winner said young Chinese players needed to emerge as a group to spur each other to greater heights.

While China has four players in the top 200 of the women's world rankings, including world No.4 and Major winner Feng Shanshan, it currently has no one in the men's top 200 - but Faldo can spot the remedy.

"They need to come and attack the big tours in numbers because, at the moment, it's a little thin," he said. "China needs to have at least half a dozen really good young golfers working their way up, winning in China, then winning in Asia and Europe to get to the PGA Tour.

"That's all going to take time. And at the same time, the rest of the world is moving on as well. There's a lot of competition out there. You see how Japan has struggled to hit the American tour in numbers, it's almost like they come one at a time. So that has to be the Chinese players' goal if they want to set the world on fire, they need to inspire each other."

Asked how soon the golf world could expect to see a Chinese man in the world's top 10, Faldo responded: "I would say it will arrive within the next 10 years or so, but you can't see it happening immediately. They have to climb the ladder and it's a tough ladder right now because international golfers are very strong."

Faldo, Britain's most successful golfer, was visiting Mission Hills to oversee the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final on the course he designed at the resort 18 years ago.

Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006. Currently, it comprises 40 tournaments in more than 30 countries and regions.

Faldo was full of praise for Mission Hills' commitment to junior golf and the prominent role the club has played in his series. "This is the ninth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final we have held here, so it's great. Mission Hills has been a big part o.
